Ards rue their luck as Portadown progress
Portadown 1 - 0 Ards
A cruel piece of luck and a missed 'sitter' during their late, determined assault in this Irish Cup bruiser at Shamrock Park robbed Ards of a replay they richly deserved.
With one minute of the 90 left on the clock, a free-kick from James Cully hit prostrate Ports keeper David Miskelly on the head and soared off to safety.
And three minutes into added time, Craig McMillan billowed the side-netting when he should have equalised.
"We didn't just deserve an equaliser, we deserved to win this one," said Ards boss Niall Currie. "We over-ran them, especially in midfield in the second half."
The vital goal was netted on 77 minutes by Ports' full-back Chris Casement, who countered: "It was no less than we deserved. We had the edge over the 90 minutes." Casement, Twigg and Brian Gartland all suffered hamstring injuries and had manager Ronnie McFall fuming afterwards. "They were caused by the heavy pitch," he insisted.
"Frankly, I'm almost relived that we've been drawn away for the final eight, (to Coleraine) for this pitch is becoming impossible to play football on, given we have so many talented players in our squad."
