Browne holds the key for Lisburn Distillery: Kirkby

Published 08/09/2008

Lisburn Distillery manager Paul Kirk had highlighted Gary Browne as key to the fortunes of his team in the build-up to the game at Stangmore Park — and his assessment was spot-on as the hat-trick hero from his previous visit to the Moygashel venue was the only player to score.

Distillery had bossed the opening half and should have led by at least two goals against a Dungannon Swifts side that had entered the tie on the back of some decent performances.

It was a different tale after the break as a couple of tactical changes from Harry Fay and the introduction of summer signing Ryan Mullanbrought brought his side to the ascendency; but plenty of time on attack couldn’t be converted into goals.

In the end, it was a defensive error that allowed Distillery to win the points, Browne shooting past a stagnant Swifts defence that should have been long gone after successfully defending a throw-in.

Kirk was delighted with the performance overall but mostly for finishing the job after a series of failures in front of the Dungannon goal that denied his side a comfortable lead at the break.

“We were well on top in the opening half but Dungannon made a game of it after the break but, based on ourfirst half performance, I thought we deserved the three points,” he said.
