Candystripes get off to sweetest of starts at Dalymount
Bohemians 1 Derry City 4
Derry City made a huge statement of intent by blowing Bohemians away in last night's opening game at Dalymount Park. Kenny Shiels' Candystripes were ruthless in attack in a hugely entertaining game.
Goals from Aaron McEneff and substitutes Nathan Boyle (2) and Lukas Schubert sealed City's third successive win at Dalymount, while Dinny Corcoran hit what proved to be a consolation for Bohemians.
The breakthrough came City's way just 14 minutes into the game. A free-kick from Nicky Low caught Bohs sleeping, with Rory Patterson getting in behind the defence. Keeper Shane Supple came out to close the striker down, fouling him in the process and gifting a penalty.
Having scored six penalties from six last season, there was little doubt that McEneff would step up, but despite having missed two in pre-season, he showed no hesitation as he rolled the ball to the right hand side of the goal to give City a 1-0 lead.
There was bad news for City just before the half hour as they lost Patterson to injury, the striker failing to recover from the knock picked up from Supple in the incident which led to the City penalty. Boyle came on.
It was 2-0 on half time thanks to a shocking back pass from Derek Pender who left his keeper stranded. Supple did well to claw it out, but Boyle made sure by ramming the ball back into the net to give a delighted City a 2-0 half time lead.
City wasted no time in the second half, making it 3-0 after 50 minutes.
Gerard Doherty launched the ball forward in the direction of Boyle who battled with Lorcan Fitzgerald before driving into the area and firing the ball low past Supple for his second goal.
But battling Bohs pulled a goal back within just five minutes, the ball deflecting into the path of Corcoran, who fired it past Doherty from close range to make it 3-1.
City sub Lukas Schubert, on the pitch for 30 seconds, put the ball into the net with his first touch to restore City's three-goal lead.
