Coleraine restore a degree of pride with goalless draw

Coleraine 0 FC Midtjylland 0 - Haugesund win 7-0 on aggregate

By Adam McKendry

Coleraine were perhaps unfortunate not to pick up a second leg victory over FK Haugesund in their Europa League first round qualifier, but they had to settle for a 0-0 draw at the Showgrounds.

The Bannsiders had chances, but they couldn't finish them off as the visitors closed out the tie with a second clean sheet, winning 7-0 on aggregate.

In the early stages it looked like it might be a repeat of last week as Ikenna Ikedi hit a long-range effort that just missed the bottom corner, but Darren McCauley tested Helge Sandvik at the other end.

Coleraine had two excellent opportunities to take the lead, both from Jamie McGonigle.

The first saw the striker side foot wide after a great cross from McCauley, before he then turned and shot well inside the box only for Sandvik to palm it onto the angle of the woodwork.

Chris Johns saved Oran Kearney's side at the start of the second half, saving point blank from Johnny Buduson's flick on from a corner.

The Bannsiders thought they had the lead when Eoin Bradley lashed home - a great finish - only for the linesman to signal very late for offside.

Haugesund closed it out expertly for a not too taxing draw and a place in the next round.
