Crusaders' Colin Coates gets insight into whole new game for Dodgeball championships

By Graham Luney

Colin Coates is normally focused on the race for the Danske Bank Premiership title but this week he's helping to promote a very different sport.

The Crusaders captain is supporting the European Dodgeball Championships, which get under way this weekend in Belfast.

Queen's Sport PEC will host the action with the opening ceremony scheduled for 5.30pm on Friday.

Coates has been given an insight into the popular sport in his role as Active Clubs Co-ordinator for the UK Dodgeball Association.

Dodgeball is a game in which players on two teams try to throw a ball at each other while avoiding being hit themselves.

"It's a pretty unusual role for me, but this is something we hope will be a huge success this weekend," said Coates.

"There will be national teams from 15 different countries, playing in male, female and mixed tournaments.

"Group stages will be on the Saturday, with the finals being played on the Sunday and it should be a great weekend for everyone involved.

"I've played dodgeball myself and it's worth a go, it's a fun sport to play."

There will also be a gala dinner at the Europa Hotel on Sunday night.
