David Healy: Terry should stay as England captain

The John Terry debate has dominated the front and back pages all week.

In many ways it shows just how high profile football has become in the 21st century with Terry’s private life splattered all over the papers.

Contrary to public opinion most of the players that I know do not want their name splashed across page one.

They would prefer to be on the back page for scoring a winning goal or helping their side win a trophy.

As we all know, however, it doesn’t work like that. Right now John Terry knows that better than anyone in Britain.

I don’t want to go into the allegations that have been made against him.

I’d rather concentrate on whether or not he should remain as captain of England.

I don’t think anyone can deny that Terry has been an outstanding skipper for both Chelsea and England.

On the field he leads by example and to footballers it is what happens on the field that matters.

It is a ruthless business and players will say who is the best captain? You couldn’t argue against Terry on that score.

Ultimately the decision rests with Fabio Capello.

He’ll do what he feels is best for the England team, but on a purely footballing basis, that is for Terry to keep the armband.
