Limerick stunned Derry City to reach their first League Cup final since 2002 with a deserved 1-0 win at the Brandywell last night.

The First Division leaders were underdogs, but they dominated the Candystripes in the first-half and were unlucky to lead by just the one goal, scored by Stephen Kenny 15 minutes in.

Airtricity Premier Division side Derry huffed and puffed in the second period but could not break down a stubborn Limerick.

Limerick ace Aaron Greene played Chris Mulhall through on goal after just 80 seconds, but Gerard Doherty got enough on the shot to allow Ryan McBride to hack behind for a corner.

Derry responded when Lukas Schubert played in Rory Patterson, but he sent his effort straight at Freddy Hall.

Limerick deservedly took the lead in the 15th minute. It was a goal that was avoidable from a Derry point of view as Dean Jarvis failed to control a cross and Kenny had the simple task of placing the ball past Doherty.

Before the break, Barry McNamee picked out a cross to the back post where Schubert arrived unmarked, only to head the ball just over the crossbar.

The pressure grew on the Limerick defence as the Candystripes threw everything at the visitors in the second period and a shot from Josh Daniels, which was parried, sparked a goalmouth scramble which saw another McNamee shot deflect wide.

Hall added to the growing frustration when he saved twice in quick succession from Daniels, and the clock ran down to confirm Derry's exit.
