Portadown showed no mercy to Dungannon Swifts was they issued their own brand of revenge for a 4-1 defeat last time, a sparkling performance by the front pairing Richard Lecky and Gary McCutcheon serious doingdamage against a Swifts team riding high in the table.
There was little between them for 36 minutes. Both had chances before the visitors took the lead through a Lecky tap-in, doubling the half-time advantage when he scooped the ball over keeper Alvin Rouse.
The 25-year-old striker’s rich vein of form continued, tapping in for a second time for his hat-trick on 50 minutes before thumping in a fourth two minutes later.
Swifts were a sorry sight but received no sympathy from their mid-Ulster rivals. McCutcheon hit two more, while Kevin Braniff and Wes Boyle completed their scoring.
Castlederg man Lecky was suitably happy and proudly in possession of the match-ball afterwards.
“I am knackered, this was my first start in two months and I was very tired in the last 20 minutes” he admitted.
“It was a great performance from the team, with several top-class goals scored.
“We have been hinting at a big win this season and our confidence has been building.
“We are eyeing up a top six finish and would like to carry momentum into the cup after Christmas, so things are looking up for us.
“Ronnie [McFall] said well done after the game and, while it wasn’t much, getting that from Ronnie is fantastic” added Lecky.
Swifts managed to prevent a repeat of their heaviest ever defeat — an 8-0 drubbing at Glentoran — when Ryan McIlmoyle and Andy Hamilton scored late consolations.
But that brought little comfort to agonising Swifts chairman Jarlath Faloon.
“This was an embarrassing result and it is totally unacceptable for this club” he fumed.
“I have been quoted in the local paper this week calling out for more supporters to come down to Stangmore Park to see the great football that we play — and this was the complete opposite of what we do.
“We will bounce back from this. We have players missing, but that wasn’t a factor in this defeat. We will look back at the performance and get things sorted out for next week” assured Faloon.
