Been there, done that, McAree still has final itch

By Staff Reporter

Rodney McAree will attempt to turn the clock back nine years as he embarks on his first Irish Cup campaign since returning as Dungannon Swifts manager.

McAree was on the scoresheet when the Swifts lost out to Linfield in the 2007 final on penalties and now he wants his charges to experience the big day.

"It would be fantastic if Dungannon Swifts could get back to an Irish Cup final," said McAree, ahead of tomorrow's fifth round clash with Warrenpoint Town.

"If you win four games you're in the final and the big incentive for us is the number of ties that don't involve a Premiership club. If we can get past Warrenpoint and get a decent draw then all of a sudden you could be looking towards the quarter-finals."

McAree isn't reading anything into the Swifts' 5-1 win over Points in November.

"Our only defeats in the last seven games have been against the top two - and they were by a single goal," said McAree.

"It's about keeping that momentum going, but this is a sticky one because Warrenpoint are tough to play against."
