McMenamin on board to boost Swifts' options for new term

By Adrian Rutherford

Dungannon Swifts have continued their summer transfer business by signing defender Liam McMenamin.

The former Ballinamallard United right back arrives as a direct replacement for Andrew Burns, who has been released.

McMenamin (28) has agreed a two-year contract and said the move is a "fresh start".

"I am delighted to be joining the Swifts," he said.

"I have always had a great admiration for Rodney (McAree), and the way the Swifts play football should suit me perfectly.

"As soon as Rodney had shown an interest to sign me it was an easy decision."

McMenamin, who previously played for Sheffield Wednesday and has represented Northern Ireland at under-21 level, added: "This is a fresh start at a fantastic club, with the desire to do better and keep progressing in the league.

"I feel I can bring some experience, some good football, as well as a bit of bite. I can't wait to get started and I am looking forward to the challenge."

McAree said McMenamin would be "a quality addition" to the squad.

"Liam is a player I've always admired - strong, competitive and very good on the ball," he added.

"He is comfortable at right back, centre half and also in midfield. I'm delighted he has signed a two-year deal with ourselves."

On Burns' departure, McAree added: "Andrew was a pleasure to work with and has decided that he needs a new challenge at this point in his career.

"We are sad to see him go but I do wish him success at whatever club he moves too."

Glenavon have, meanwhile, announced the release of veteran duo David Elebert and Andy Kilmartin, who have both rejected new one-year deals at Mourneview Park.

Elsewhere, Roy Carroll picked up the Linfieldfc.com Player of the Year honour at the Blues' gala awards ceremony at Belfast's Crowne Plaza Hotel on Saturday evening.
