Swifts need to up their game against 'lesser' teams: McAree

Dungannon Swifts 3 Carrick Rangers 1

Rodney McAree believes Dungannon Swifts must improve their record against the bottom six.

The Stangmore side have taken more points against teams in the top half this season - a source of frustration for McAree, who has seen them stumble in a number of winnable fixtures.

On Saturday they made hard work of beating Carrick Rangers and McAree believes they need to up their game.

"I actually looked at it before the game and we had only seven points against the teams that we had played in the bottom six so far this season," he said.

"In comparison we had 17 points against the teams in the top six. It shows that maybe there is a level of inconsistency among the group in terms of maybe not working as hard against the bottom six.

"I thought Chris Hegarty and Dougie Wilson were outstanding. Had we not had those two in our team today then I think we might have struggled. They fought for everything."

Dungannon led at the break after Ally Teggart's classy strike, but Carrick levelled via a sensational 30-yard effort from Steven McCullough.

Ryan Harpur re-established the Swifts' lead and Mitchell made it 3-1 late on - his 14th of the season.

Another defeat leaves Carrick still second bottom, but boss Aaron Callaghan said: "I believe we can stay up - absolutely. It was a bad result but a very good performance."
