Dunlop to be demoted after latest blunder

Referee Ross Dunlop is set to join Warrenpoint Town in the Championship at the start of next season after causing a storm on a crazy final day of the Danske Bank Premiership campaign.

The Carrickfergus official awarded a hugely controversial 90th-minute penalty against Warrenpoint, which ultimately sent them down. Had Point beaten Dungannon Swifts, who finally scored after goalkeeper Jonathan Parr had first saved the penalty and two rebounds, they would have stayed in the top-flight, but the 1-1 draw saw them automatically relegated.

Dunlop's latest moment in the spotlight comes almost exactly 12 months after he also took centre stage in last season's Irish Cup final.

He was demoted to the second tier in the opening weeks of this season after failing to award a foul on Portadown midfielder Michael Gault when clear through on goal and he also missed a clear back-pass in the same incident, just seconds before Glentoran's winning goal, and is now facing the same punishment
