Foyle Cup: Johnny Giles urging starlets to aim high

By Stuart McKinley

Leeds United legend Johnny Giles has challenged this year's Foyle Cup participants to follow in the footsteps of their predecessors and make it all the way to the top.

The tournament will kick off on Monday July 18, just over a week after the conclusion of Euro 2016.

A number of Foyle Cup alumni, including Republic of Ireland pair Shay Given and John O'Shea, will be in France and Giles wants to see the next crop of youngsters aspire to reach the same heights, with full-time clubs set to monitor the talent on show at the tournament.

"The likes of John O'Shea and Shay Given played in the Foyle Cup over the years and went on to play at international level which is fantastic," said Giles at the launch event in Londonderry's City Hotel.

"It's fantastic for young kids and it's a good time for scouts from the bigger clubs to come and watch these players."

This year's Hughes Insurance Foyle Cup will be the biggest yet, with over 300 teams due to take part across the Londonderry, Strabane and Limavady area from July 18 to 23.
