Awesome Allen inspires Glentoran ahead of Irish Cup clash

Portadown 0 Glentoran 5

By Stuart McKinley

Glentoran will go into Saturday's Big Two Irish Cup battle with Linfield on the back of their biggest win of the season. Two goals from Curtis Allen, either side of a fine finish from Nacho Novo, were followed by late strikes from Chris Lavery and substitute Jonathan Smith and saw the Glens beat Portadown 5-0 to move above Ards into eighth place in the Danske Bank Premiership table.

Manager Gary Haveron was even able to take goalscorers Novo, Allen and captain Stephen McAlorum off in preparation for Saturday's Cup clash.

Portadown manager Niall Currie threw Jordan Lyttle and Marcio Soares straight into the team after both returned following six-month spells at Crusaders.

The Glens, however, looked threatening even before they took the lead on 20 minutes.

Chris Lavery pulled a low cross into the box and Allen did enough to send the ball into the far corner of the net.

A slick move down the left led to the Glens doubling their lead on 31 minutes. Ross Redman played a neat one-two with McAlorum before delivering a cross. Novo brought the ball under control and unleashed a low shot into the bottom corner.

And the Glens powered to victory with three goals in the final 18 minutes. Allen was quickest to react after Chris McGaughey failed to hold Ciaran Caldwell's cross on 72 minutes and three minutes later Lavery rolled one into the bottom corner before setting up Smith to fire in from 15 yards eight minutes later.
