Alan Kernaghan has begun his rebuilding exercise at Glentoran by axing six players from his squad.

The number of departures from The Oval this summer could hit double figures after four more players were placed on the transfer list.

The biggest surprise is that centre-half Calum Birney and last season's Irish Cup-winning hero David Scullion have been made available to other clubs.

Kernaghan has told Aaron Hogg, Stephen McCullough, Fra McCaffrey, Niall Henderson and Dale Patton that they won't be given new deals, while Danny McKee has been released by mutual consent.

Like Scullion and Birney, Conor McMenamin and Kristian Gibson have been made available for transfer.

"Work has started on building a new Glentoran capable of sustaining a more meaningful challenge for trophies so it's necessary to make significant changes to the playing squad," said Kernaghan.

e WILLIE Faulkner, Darren Henderson and Kyle McVey have all signed new one-year contracts at Ballymena United, while Gary Thompson has signed one for two years.

Johnny Taylor is mulling over the offer of a new deal, but Dwayne Nelson, Paddy McNally and and Michael Ruddy have all been released.
