New boys gear up for Detroit as Glens mark Cougars anniversary

By Conor McLaughlin

Glentoran's three recent recruits from the Championship will be part of the squad that travels to the United States for next week's fixture with Detroit City.

Former Ballyclare Comrades midfielder Corey McMullan, ex-Carrick Rangers ace Daniel Kelly and Glens returnee John McGuigan - back in east Belfast following a successful spell at Warrenpoint Town - have all been named in Gary Haveron's 16-man squad for the May 27 encounter at the Keyworth Stadium.

The match has been arranged to mark 50 years since Glentoran toured the States under the guise of the Detroit Cougars as part of a coordinated attempt to introduce football to North America.

The Cougars - whose players Billy Sinclair and Tommy Jackson will also be part of next week's official party - played 12 games between May 28 and July 9, 1967, tackling representatives from Brazil, Uruguay, England, Scotland, Italy, the Netherlands and the Republic of Ireland.

Modern day stars Jonny Addis, Calum Birney, William Garrett, Aaron Harmon and Tiernan McAuley are ruled out through injury, Marcus Kane is on a pre-booked holiday and work commitments will prevent both Dylan Davidson and Kym Nelson from travelling.

Glentoran squad: Elliott Morris, Dwayne Nelson, Ross Redman, Tre Sterling, Karl Hamill, James Ferrin, Eric Foley, Steven Gordon, Curtis Allen, John McGuigan, Daniel Kelly, Conall Delaney, Paul O'Neill, Salou Jallow, Jonathan Smith, Corey McMullan.
