Inishowen a class above
Inishowen have proven to be masters in their class after coming out on top in a warm up competition, ahead of the Foyle Cup which kicks off on July 16.
A representative team from the north west league picked up the trophy after a 2-0 victory over Foyle Harps in the decider.
Derry City manager Declan Devine runs a football masterclass with Foyle Cup contenders prior to the popular youth football tournament, with four teams taking advantage of the former Candystripes goalkeeper’s expertise.
The competition was aimed at under 14s and the four lucky teams that successfully struck gold to receive quality coaching at the the Brandywell were Oxford United Stars, Foyle Harps, Derry & District Youth and the Inishowen Football League.
These four victorious teams were put through their paces by Devine and his players, giving the young stars technical advice and match briefings on major competitions — all techniques and strategies employed by the Candystripes themselves.
“It was a fantastic day, a great opportunity for us to give the four winning teams a coaching masterclass with my team,” said Devine.
“Derry City FC are delighted to be able to support this competition. Under 14 is a key age for footballers — when hard work and commitment to your sport are essential — hopefully the players got a real taste of what professional football is like and what it takes to succeed.”
Gareth Finlay from Hughes Insurance, which co-ordinated the event, added: “Declan and his players are an inspiration and hopefully tournaments like these encourage more young people to get involved in local sport.”
