Irish League look back towards Yorkshire

Published 10/06/2009

JJB Sports’ one-year deal to sponsor the Irish FA Premiership won’t be renewed.

And that could lead to former backers, Leeds Metropolitan University, stepping back into a partnership with the Irish FA.

JJB stepped in at the eleventh hour to back the Premiership when it kicked off last August, having sponsored the Irish Cup since 2007, but given their perilous financial position, that link-up was only ever likely to last one season.

The Cup sponsorship has two years remaining, that deal will continue, as will the partnership which sees sportswear giants Umbro supply the Northern Ireland playing kit through the High Street retailer.

The Irish FA are currently involved in discussions with potential new sponsors and are confident that they will have something in place well in advance of the August 8 kick-off of the 2009-10 campaign.

Leeds Met were sponsors from 2005 until last year, with the the Premier League — and some schools competitions — bearing their Carnegie brand.

Ladbrokes will continue to sponsor the IFA Championship.
