Keeper Doherty succeeds tragic McBride as the captain of Derry
Derry City have named Gerard Doherty as their new captain. The 35-year-old goalkeeper will don the armband following the tragic death of Ryan McBride.
Derry are back in action for the first time since Ryan's passing when they take on Bray Wanderers at Maginn Park tomorrow.
Doherty has been with the Candystripes since 2008 and the club made a 100 per cent start to the campaign before Ryan's death led to matches against Limerick and Galway United being postponed.
Derry boss Kenny Shiels has urged his players to approach the game with the right mindset and not let emotions affect their performance.
"They have to go out there and win it for themselves, and then they can think about Ryan," said Shiels.
"If the players go out there with the mindset that they absolutely have to win it for Ryan, then that could prove too much for them.
"It is going to be hard and it's difficult because life just continues, but while we can't move on, we will go on because we have to.
"Playing for each other now and having that mindset will give them a much more positive dynamic and that is something we have to do on Friday and every game now."
