Matty Burrows could spike big guns for Fifa Ballon d’Or Puskas Award

Nobody in modern day Irish League football has scored more goals than Glenn Ferguson.

Now though ‘Spike’ is backing quality over quantity. And if the busy father and grandfather can get a minute to himself, he’ll be hitting the net once again — the Internet that is — to vote for Matty Burrows to win the Fifa Ballon d’Or Puskas Award.

Burrows’ stunning back-heeled volley that gave Glentoran an injury time victory over Portadown back in October is in the running for the award, although Lisburn Distillery striker Ferguson suggests that the presence of Barcelona’s Lionel Messi will make it difficult for the Glens hitman to win, irrespective of the quality of the goals.

“It was a couple of days after Matty scored the goal before I got to see it, but I’d heard a lot about it,” said Ferguson.

“There’s no doubt that it’s a great goal. It actually looks better in slow-motion when you can see the technique.

“It’s the thing you could try 1,000 times and never get right, so to try it in an important league match when it’s still 0-0 going into injury time, he deserves a lot of credit for that.

“I think everyone should get on and vote for Matty. To even be in the top 10 is an achievement and it’s great for the league in general to get the recognition. It would be a real positive if he won it and it would be great for both Matty and the league.

“With Messi in there and if you think that Barcelona have 90,000 at their home matches, plus all of Argentina probably voting for him, it shows you what Matty is up against.”

To vote for Matty, visit by the closing date of December 13. The winner will be revealed on January 10, 2011.
