McAreavey set to cross swords with old Linfield friends

Paul McAreavey is set to make his Ballymena United debut against former club Linfield tomorrow after coming through a reserve game last night.

McAreavey — who was part of Linfield’s Grand Slam winning squad during the 2005-06 season — has joined the Sky Blues until the end of the season and was given a run-out against the Swifts in order to be ready for the trip to Windsor Park.

Sky Blues boss Roy Walker snapped up McAreavey — who last played competitive football with Donegal Celtic last season — after he trained with the club.

Walker will also hand a start at Windsor Park to goalkeeper Ryan Brown. The former Bangor and Larne ‘keeper came on as substitute in the Irish Cup defeat to Glentoran on Tuesday night after Dwayne Nelson was stretchered off at the Oval.

Nelson has since been ruled out for the season after breaking his right elbow, handing Brown another chance to claim the number one spot.

McAreavey was Walker’s first signing of the January transfer window and his second, secured yesterday, is another Linfield man.

The Blues have allowed teenage striker Aaron Boyd to move to the Showgrounds on-loan until the end of the season after he signed a new contract at Windsor Park.

Boyd, however, won’t play in tomorrow’s game.
