McCann named Lisburn Distillery boss

Lisburn Distillery have confirmed the appointment of Tim McCann as their new manager — on a caretaker basis.

It is understood that the former Glentoran and Cliftonville winger cannot be named as the club’s permanent manager as yet as he isn’t in possession of the Uefa A Licence required to manage in the Irish FA Premiership.

That matter, however, will be resolved in the next few weeks when McCann begins the A Licence course.

“Tim impressed during our interview process,” said Whites chairman Jim Greer.

McCann, who will be assisted by his former Glens team-mate Gary Smyth, said: “I am looking forward to getting stuck in — it’s an honour for me in my first managerial role to be in charge of such a reputable club as Distillery; the club has a great history.”

And there is further good news for the Whites after striker Gary Liggett confirmed that he will not be leaving the club this summer, despite interest from a number of clubs.

Harold Mayne-Nicholls, a former president of the Chilean Football Federation and the man who led the Fifa evaluation group that inspected venues for the 2018 and 2022 World Cup finals, has visited some of the grounds hosting Milk Cup games this summer.

He flew into Northern Ireland from Barcelona ahead of today’s draw for the 30th annual international youth tournament.
