Not again: Derry’s Josh Daniels rues yet another missed opportunity

Derry City and Drogheda United have to do it all again on Tuesday night after an entertaining 1-1 draw in the second round of the FAI Cup at the Brandywell.

Drogheda goalkeeper Stephen McGuinness was named man of the match after an inspirational display, including a brilliant penalty save from Rory Patterson early in the second-half.

It was another game in which the Candystripes passed up countless opportunities to score.

Midway through the first-half, the Drogheda net should have been bulging as Josh Daniels latched onto a pass from Dean Jarvis and went through one-on-one against McGuinness, but the goalkeeper was able to save.

Conor McCormack thought he had opened the scoring on 26 minutes, only for McGuinness to again get a fingertip to the ball.

It was all Derry, but a huge error from captain Ryan McBride gifted Drogheda a goal on 33 minutes. McBride attempted to play the ball back to Gerard Doherty, but his effort was too short and it put Sam O'Connor clean through. O'Connor's first effort was saved but he netted the rebound.

Derry were nearly level at the start of the second-half when Aaron McEneff hit an incredible half volley from 25 yards which crashed back off the crossbar.

The hosts then had a magnificent opportunity on 56 minutes when Jake Hyland brought Daniels down in the penalty area. Patterson stepped forward, but for the second time this season, he failed from 12 yards.

But the red tide just kept on coming, and on 72 minutes their endeavour earned them a slice of luck as McCormack's ball over the top sent Lukas Schubert in behind the Drogheda defence.

McGuinness looked favourite to get to the ball, but Schubert tumbled to the ground and another penalty was awarded.

The decision incensed Drogheda but McEneff drilled the ball into the corner to give Derry an overdue equaliser and a replay.

Derry City: Doherty, Vemmelund, Jarvis, McEneff, McBride, McCormack, McNamee (McDermott 86), Ward (Schubert 60), Patterson, Daniels, Barry.

Drogheda United: McGuinness, Dunne, Cooney, Hyland, Brennan (Thorton 80), O'Connor (Donnelly 69), Gallagher, Wixted (Kirwan 55), Molloy, Ashe, Costello. Referee: Paul Tuite.
