Glentoran boss Alan McDonald has been rewarded for his side's 100 per cent start to the season by picking up the Harp Lager Northern Ireland Football Writers' manager-of-the-month award for September.

It is the first managerial gong for the former Northern Ireland captain, who took over the reins from Paul Millar in the summer, having originally arrived at the Oval as first team coach in January.

Since taking the job himself, he has guided the Glens to the quarter-finals of the CIS Insurance Cup and on Tuesday night took them into the final of the Co Antrim Shield by beating Cliftonville at Windsor Park in the semi final.

During the month of September, the east Belfast men registered two impressive victories over Lisburn Distillery in the CIS Cup and the Co Antrim Shield.

They also came from two goals behind to beat Larne at Inver Park and then defeated Armagh City twice - once in the CIS and in their Carnegie Premier League opener.

Arguably the best performance came against Ballymena United last Saturday, capping off the month with a 4-0 victory at the Showgrounds.

McDonald's men take on Dungannon Swifts in the Carnegie Premier league on Saturday as they look to carry their good start to the campaign into October.
