Platt backs Coleraie star Patterson for Northern Ireland
Coleraine manager David Platt says he hopes his goalscoring sensation Rory Patterson does get a phone call from Northern Ireland boss Nigel Worthington.
Worthington was at the Oval on Wednesday night to see the 25-year-old score yet again to help fire his side into the Co-operative Insurance Cup final.
Before the game, Platt was presented with the Northern Ireland Football Writers’ Manager of the Month Award for January, sponsored by Carling.
The Bannsiders are flying on the back of January wins over Dundela in the Irish Cup and Premiership victories over Crusaders, Ballymena United and Glentoran.
Patterson, in particular, has been in red hot form, netting a hat-trick against Crusaders and Glentoran — the club he will link up with in the summer.
With Northern Ireland scheduled to take on Albania in a friendly on March 3, speculation is growing that Patterson could get a call from Worthington.
“Nigel has kept an eye on local talent and Coleraine certainly has plenty of players in that category,” said Platt, whose side travel to Glenavon tomorrow. “We also have Under-23, Under-21 and Under-19 internationals so it is pleasing to see them get recognition. The Irish League has a lot to offer and everyone can see what Rory brings to the team, his goals which are a priceless commodity.
“Nigel has heard good reports and he will keep an eye on the player’s progress. Rory deserves all the praise going and hopefully the international manager will continue to be impressed.
“Stephen Carson has also won an international cap and in the last few weeks he has also caught the eye with some superb performances.”
As he clutches his second Manager of the Month gong — his first arrived last February — Platt can now look forward to a Co-operative Insurance Cup final against Glentoran next month.
“It’s a fantastic achievement which keeps the season very much alive and I appreciate the hard work done by everyone at the club that doesn’t get acknowledged,” he added. “The backroom staff and players have been wonderful.”
