Predators hit back to make a point
The Newbridge Predators astonished the female football circle when they secured their first point drawing 2-2 with Cliftonville in the Concentrix Premiership on Wednesday night.
Following the expulsion of the Fermanagh Mallards from the league at the beginning of the week, and the removal of all Fermanagh's records, the Preds lost the only three points they had accumulated all season. However, this didn't dampen the positive attitude within coach Sandy Shaw's girls as they fought hard to secure a point.
"It was a great performance from the girls but I'm not happy with one point because we deserved the three but that's football" said Shaw.
Shaw's side went up 2-0 with goals from both strikers Alex Ogle and reformed defender Sonia Ferguson before Cliftonville's captain Marissa Callaghan bagged two goals for the Reds on her return from injury to put Cliftonville on 13 points in third place behind the Crues in second.
"After being up 2-0 we started to sit too deep and that's how they equalised which is disappointing, but I have told the girls to keep it going, keep fighting and that they are good enough to compete in this league" added the Newbridge coach.
Second goal scorer Sonia Ferguson got her first goal of the season rifling a free kick from outside the 18 yard box into the top right corner. The former defender was delighted with her goal: "It's a great feeling to score and having played in defence for years and getting to play striker was really enjoyable."
In other league news, the Glens secured an 11 point lead as they defeated Ballymena 5-0 with goals from Demi Vance (2), Kelly Bailie (2) and Nina Montgomery. Leaders Glentoran Belfast United are 11 points ahead of Crusaders Strikers in the league though they have played a game more.
