Rory Patterson pounces to extend Derry City's winning run
Derry City made it four wins from four at the Brandywell this season as a first-half goal from Rory Patterson was enough to defeat Bohemians.
The City striker lashed in his sixth goal of the season, after Barry McNamee had gone to ground when one-on-one with Bohs goalkeeper Dean Delaney.
It proved to be the decisive moment in the game with City tiring badly in the second period, as the efforts of three games in seven days took its toll.
The hosts got their rewards for a positive start by grabbing the opening goal on 14 minutes.
Keith Ward received the ball with his back to goal 25 yards out, but in one movement he turned and played Barry McNamee through on goal.
McNamee had only Delaney, to beat but as he shaped to shoot, he appeared to lose his footing, which completely bewildered the Bohemians goalkeeper.
With both players grounded, the loose ball ran perfectly for Patterson, who side-footed the ball into the empty net.
Bohemians should have equalised on 31 minutes as a counter attack from a Derry corner saw Roberto Lopes play Kurtis Byrne through on goal.
The Bohs striker did everything right as he controlled the ball on his chest, but as he went to volley the ball past Gerard Doherty, he swung his right foot and somehow missed the ball completely, much to the amusement - and relief - of the Brandywell crowd.
Bohemians emerged the more dominant force in the opening stages of the second half and with City unable to gain a foothold in the game, an air of unease permeated the Brandywell, as the visitors sought to press home their advantage.
The effects of three games in seven days was clearly taking its toll on Derry in the second half, with then hosts working hard but unable to reproduce the vigour of the first period.
Bohemians sensed that vulnerability and took the game to Derry, but for all their possession, there was little in the way of chances for the visitors. Bohs brought on Mark Quigley and Jake Kelly in an attempt to grab the equaliser, but they couldn't produce a notable chance and Derry held on.
