Cliftonville progressed through to the next round of the Setanta Sports Cup, despite falling to a 2-0 defeat to St Patrick's Athletic last night.
Eddie Patterson's team held a 3-0 advantage from last week's first leg and that proved to be the difference even though Dave Mulcahy and David McMillan both scored.
St Pat's, who reached the final of this competition last year, started on a lively note with Danny North and Anthony Murphy going close with efforts early on.
In fact, it was the Saints who created all of the first-half chances as they attempted to scrap their way back into the tie. But they were missing a coolness in front of goal.
Derek Doyle let rip with a snap shot on 25 minutes, but Cliftonville's Tony Kane was in the right place to clear his effort off the line. For all of their positive play, Pete Mahon's men lacked quality in the execution of their chances. Although, Mulcahy bucked that trend with a fine hooked finish on 41 minutes after Murphy's long throw-in landed nicely for the midfielder.
Two minutes after the interval, Doyle lost his marker to connect with another long throw from Murphy but the winger failed to hit the target with his powerful header.
The Saints did get a second goal on 80 minutes when Derek Pender's cross was spilled by keeper John Connolly and McMillan blasted in the loose ball to cut the margin.
With the pressure on, Cliftonville were severely tested as Connolly pulled off a fine save to deny Conor Kenna.
But the visitors didn't concede that third goal which would have forced extra-time.
