Teddy Sheringham coming to Coleraine

By Steven Beacom

Former Manchester United and Tottenham hero Teddy Sheringham is on his way to the Coleraine Showgrounds next month.

No, he won’t be forming a new- look strike-force with Curtis Allen for the Bannsiders in the coming Carling Premiership season; instead he will be taking part in a very special fixture for Coleraine legend Victor Hunter.

A testimonial for the ex-Coleraine and Derry City goalkeeping great is being organised for August 5 at the Showgrounds.

Ex-England hero Sheringham will be one of the star attractions on a night (kick-off 7.30) when two select sides managed by Iam McFaul and Liam Beckett will roll back the years.

Sheringham has been persuaded to turn out for Hunter by former Northern Ireland skipper Steve Lomas, who started his career at Coleraine and retains close links with the town.

Other ex-Northern Ireland stars Tommy Wright, Jim Magilton, Barry Hunter, Keith Gillespie and Glenn Ferguson are also lined up to play.

Celebrities and other sports stars will be involved, including Ballymena boxer and ex-world champion Eamonn Loughran.

Hunter, now 74, won two Northern Ireland caps and has a long association with Coleraine FC.

He played almost 500 games for the club, making his debut back in the mid-50s.

Victor was nicknamed “the Black Cat” such was his athleticism between the sticks.

After retiring from playing, Hunter worked for the club in various capacities, including as manager between 1978 and 1981.

Recently he left Colera ine, but is relishing his testimonial.

Organisers have asked anyone who has played with or against Victor in his career to attend.

Admission on the night is just £5, which fans can pay at the turnstiles.
