Ballymena & Provincial League round-up October 19

In the only league game scheduled for Saturday in the Intermediate League, Rathcoole FC had Limavady-based team Newtowne as visitors to the Diamond, with Newtowne  impressed with the facilities provided by Newtownabbey Council.

Newtowne had the chance to go in front from the penalty spot in the 28th minute, but Gerard Logue saw the home keeper make an excellent save. Gerard Logue then made up for the missed penalty when scoring on the 30th minute, then added a second goal in the 40th minute. Rathcoole never gave up though. They got back into the game after Brian Black scored in the 79th minute, but failed to get the equaliser as time ran out.

Desertmartin met Coleraine Reserves in the semi-final of the North West Craig Memorial Cup at Anderson Park in Coleraine. The Reserves went in front in the eighth minute, Desertmartin equalised in the 25th minute through Robin Patton, but three more goals for the Reserves before half time killed the game. Desertmartin got a second goal when Chris Kerr scored on the 63rd minute.

In Junior 1, Ballyclare Comrades Reserves made it six wins from six played, with a  good win away to Killymoon Rangers Reserves with goals scored by Aaron Lindsay (2) and goals each for Tyler McMaster, Mark Conn, Jamie McTaggart and Daniel Ellis. Cookstown Olympic and Chimney Corner Reserves shared three goals, with the Olympic winning with goals scored by Ryan Devlin and Jon O’Neil, with Ciaran Faith converting a penalty for the Corner. Castle Star and Mallusk Athletic shared the points and four goals, with Warren Brown and Dean Meneely scoring for Castle and Alan McCartney and Michael Frew scoring for Mallusk.

In Junior 2, FC Whiteabbey had FC Larne as visitors at UUC Jordanstown, winning 5-2. Colin McLean and Stevie White scored for Larne. Carniny Amateurs II and Ballynure Old Boys ‘B’ scored nine goals between them with Dean Surgenor (2) Craig Greene and Jon Henderson on the mark for Carniny, and Craig Heggarty, Matthew McClurg, Josh McIlroy and Ross McFall (2) scoring for Ballynure.

Ballyclare North End had a good 3-2 home win over Cookstown RBL. Ryan Davey (2) and Russell Lynas scored for North End and Richard McMenemy and Andy Kelso scored for RBL, whose player Louis Hampton was taken to hospital with an arm injury. Ballysillan Swifts and Remo FC drew in a six-goal thriller, with Tommy Smyth, Jason Bannon and James Brown scoring for Remo, and William Swain, Craig Taylor and Ryan Lewis scoring for the Swifts.

In Junior 3, Wakehurst Strollers continued their winning streak with their sixth win from six played. The game was a personal triumph for Jon Alexander who scored four and Matthew Logan (2). Red Star with a hat-trick from Stuart Thompson and one from Robbie Collins beat Clough Rangers Athletic 4-1. Newington YC II and Rathcoole FC Reserves shared the points and four goals, with Steve Coppen and Dave Montgomery scoring for Rathcoole.

In Junior 4, Krag Albion suffered their first defeat in five losing 1-0 against Monkstown FC. Forthriver FC were leading 2-0 before Joe Ward pulled a goal back for Mallusk Athletic Reserves. 3rd Ballyclare Old Boys were three goals in front of Glengormley United at half time, then the United pulled a goal back in the second half.
