Down Area Winter Football League round-up, April 2

Published 03/04/2016

Saturday was quarter-finals day in both the Sittlington Cup and the Frank Moore Cup and the games didn't disappoint, with plenty of goals being scored.

In the Sittlington Cup, it was four games involving Premier Division clubs against Division 1 clubs, with the Premier Division clubs gaining the upper hand in all but one. Division 1 leaders Agape were up against 3rd Bangor and they showed how far they have come on this season, as they eased into the semi-final with a 4-1 victory. High-flying Comber Young Men showed their Premier Division class, as they eased past Carrowdore Young Men 5-0. Greenwell Star, with one trophy already in the bag following their Jigsaw Financial Billy Allen Memorial Cup win, kept their 'Grand Slam' dreams alive as they eased past 43rd Dundonald 9-1, and the last team through to the semi-finals was Corrymeela, as they edged an eight-goal thriller against Queens Grads III 5-3. In the Frank Moore Cup, North Down moved into the semi-final draw, as they beat Bangor YM III 3-1. High-flying newbies, Clonduff, kept their double dream alive, as they eased past Stranmillis 37th OB 4-0. There was an eight-goal thriller between Oakfield Breda and Ards Rangers III, with Ards edging it 5-3, and in the final game, Newtownards RBL continued their excellent start to life in the DAWFL, with a closely-fought 3-2 win over Comber Star. Well done to all the clubs involved.

In the Premier Division, Moat Park Rangers pulled further away at the top, as they earned the three points in a 3-1 win over Bangor Rangers III. Have they built up a commanding lead or will Greenwell Star, with games in hand, be able to overtake them? The next month is going to be exciting to see how this battle unfolds. Last year's champions, Brentwood, who have had a very indifferent year this season, showed they can still score goals as they trounced Ravenhill YM III 6-0.

In the Mervyn Bassett Reserve Team Cup, Abbey Villa IV moved into the next round, as they beat Newtownards RBL II 3-1. In the Tommy Murphy Memorial Shield group matches, there were victories for Queens Grads IV (7-2), Greenwell Star II (5-0), Bangor Rangers IV (2-1), Comber YM II (5-2), 3rd Bangor II (6-2) and Clonduff II (8-0).
