Down Area Winter Football League round-up, May 10
After weeks of uncertainty the destination of the DAWFL Premiership title is finally known, with Moat Park Rangers capping off a magnificent season by adding the league’s top prize to their impressive silverware collection.
As a club the Dundonald men not only lifted the Premiership and Division 2a titles, but also reached every DAWFL final available to them, winning the Sittlington Cup and Tommy Murphy Memorial Shield along the way. And what a way it was to make sure of the League title, with Comber Young Men getting a lesson into why they our champions, following an 8-2 defeat.
Last year’s champions Greenwell Star pushed James Dickson’s men right to the end, however their 1-1 draw against Oakfield Breda completed a disappointing day for Lee Cathcart’s team.
The Division 1 league programme came to a conclusion with Ballygowan securing fifth position in an impressive 5-0 win over the Frank Moore Memorial Shield finalists, 43 OB’s.
Stranmillis 37th OB ended their poor season on a high with a 5-2 win over Ards Rangers III, while Bangor Rangers III’s and Bryansburn Rangers III’s played out a 1-1 draw.
It was a festival of goals in the Division 2a clash between Greenwell Star II’s and Vision Athletic II’s, with both teams hitting five apiece.
The story of the day was in Division 2b however, with North Down II’s emulating their first team’s success by lifting the league title. Like Moat Park Rangers the Newtownards men did it in style, with an 8-2 thrashing of Agape II’s.
In the remaining ties 8th OB II drew with Stranmillis 37th OB II’s, while Comber Star II’s beat Ballygowan II’s 3-1.
