Down Area Winter Football League round-up, October 3

Published 04/10/2015

With some of the top Premier Division teams not in league action this week, it was a chance for the chasing pack to try and close the gap.

Corrymeela led the charge with an emphatic home win against Newtown Forest to move within six points of the top two (Greenwell Star & Moat Park Rangers), with 8th OB also closing to within six points courtesy of a 3-1 home win over North Down. There was a bottom of the table battle when Ravenhill YM III entertained Comber Star with the home team securing a 6-3 win and resigning Comber Star to their eighth straight defeat of the season. The final game saw a close battle when Vision Athletic entertained Oakfield Breda with Vision edging a five-goal thriller 3-2.

In Division 1, Queens Grads III had an opportunity to go top with the leading teams not in league action, but a shock first win of the season for Castlereagh FC 82 saw the away team secure a 5-2 win to move off the bottom of the league. Bangor YM III entertained close rivals Abbey Villa III with the home securing a narrow 3-2 win. Bryansburn Rangers III entertained Newtownards RBL but a 4-2 defeat meant that, with Castlereagh's win, they moved to the bottom of the division. A six-goal thriller between Stranmillis 37th OB and Bangor Swiffts III resulted in the spoils being shared in a 3-3 draw. The final game saw struggling Willowfield Parish entertain Shorts III, but their troubles continued following a 3-1 defeat.

Meanwhile, in Division 2A, following last week's shock defeat, the last thing you want is for your next game to be against the unbeaten reigning champions, but that's the position top team Greenwell Star II found themselves in when they entertained Moat Park Rangers II, but a 2-0 win consigned Moat Park to their first defeat to maintain their position at the top. Brentwood II, however, kept up the pressure and maintained their own 100% start to the season with a 3-1 derby win over North Down II to stay in second place on goal difference, but with a game in hand. Newly-promoted Comber Star II continued their miserable start to life in 2A with a resounding 5-0 home defeat to Vision Athletic II to remain firmly rooted to the bottom of the division. The final game saw Newtown Forest II entertain Corrymeela II who played out a close 1-1 draw to share the spoils.

In Division 2B, there was plenty of goals this week. Abbey Villa IV continued their impressive 100% start to the season with a close 3-2 home win over Oakfield Breda II to remain at the top. Second-placed Clonduff II maintained their own unbeaten start with a resounding 10-2 home win over Newtownards RBL II. Bottom club Willowfield Parish's problems continued when they were comprehensively beaten 7-0 away to 43rd Dundonald II to keep them rooted to the bottom and are yet to score this season.
