Tributes for local Belfast Celtic legend Jackie Denver (87)

Published 22/07/2013

The Northern Ireland football family is mourning the death of former Belfast Celtic and Glenavon favourite Jackie Denver. He was 87.

Jackie was a stalwart of Elisha Scott's side of the 1940s and was in squad for the infamous Linfield game in 1948 which led to club's demise.

He was also on the Belfast side in New York in 1949 which beat Scotland 2-0.

Along with great friend Jimmy Jones, he left Celtic for the Lurgan Blues, who had their most successful period in the 1950s under Jimmy McAlinden.

Jackie's son Alex played for Glenavon and Crusaders.

The Belfast Celtic Society committee and membership are among those who have expressed deep condolences to Jackie's family and friends.
