Tullycarnet last night completed a unique double over Kelvin OB with victory in the Cochrane Corry Cup final at Seaview - just seven days after beating the same opponents in the Junior Shield decider.

This meeting of the Amateur League Division 2A rivals was much closer than Tullycarnet's 4-0 triumph last Wednesday, and although extra time was required on this occasion, the eventual outcome was the same.

Kelvin OB had a shout for a penalty waved away after just two minutes when Glen Booth went to ground under a Paul Davis challenge. Undeterred, the Dixon Park men continued to push, and came close with two free-kicks in quick succession.

Kelvin had the upper hand, yet as Eddie Williamson rifled into the side-netting, last week must have been weighing on their minds.

Sure enough, they were so nearly punished in the 33rd minute as John Douglas rattled the upright with a dangerous in-swinging corner, then Thomas Gorman crashed a shot against the crossbar from the rebound.

But it remained goalless at half time… just like last week. Would history repeat itself?

The best opportunities continued to come from set-pieces, with Williamson guiding a Kelvin free-kick to William Gill, but the ball trickled wide.

At the opposite end, Tullycarnet sent the goalframe shuddering once more, as David Hume's header from a Douglas free-kick struck the post.

It was going to take either a moment of madness or brilliance to win it. The latter almost arrived for Kelvin in the 86th minute when Stewart Smith delivered a fantastic ball to Booth, but he thumped it over and the game went into extra time.

Just 70 seconds after the additional time had begun, Tullycarnet claimed the decisive winner - Davis sending through James Gorman, who was left to flick home.

Tullycarnet are now bidding for the league title to complete an historic treble… but must secure at least four points in a double-header against familiar foes Kelvin this Saturday and next Tuesday to finish the job.

Tullycarnet: R Laverty, C Laverty (J Gorman, 45), Black, Ferguson, Hume, Campbell, Douglas (Winters, 88), Callacher, Brown (McCabe, 85), T Gorman, Davis.

Kelvin OB: Lavery, McAllister, Booth, Gill, McCullough (Wightman 100), Bingham, Martin (Smith, 58), Williamson, Surgeon (Hislop, 78), Marks, Rodgers.
