Linfield Ladies missed the chance to complete a clean sweep of all four women's trophies after they lost 2-0 to Newry City Ladies in the League Cup final at Holm Park in Armagh.

Having eased to the title in the Women's Premiership and County Antrim FA Cup, Linfield's Irish Cup triumph made them favourites to complete an historic quadruple.

But Newry proved to be the spanner in the works as a stunning free-kick from Grace Murray and a second half goal from Aimee Mackin handed the underdogs a surprise win, but in the end a deserved one for the Newry women, who were the stronger throughout the game.

They started brighter and, after Emma McMaster saw an effort go wide, Murray broke the deadlock with an outstanding set piece strike on the half hour mark.

The Blues pressed for an equaliser just before the break, but it wasn't forthcoming, and after the break Mackin made them pay as she controlled a long ball through and finished smartly into the bottom corner.

With the clean sweep slipping away, Linfield went for the all-out assault, but the women from Newry held out admirably to take the trophy.
