Welders and Breda clash on thin ice

Saturday’s Paddy Power Steel & Sons Cup final is expected to be postponed following a 1.30pm pitch inspection at Seaview this afternoon.
The Christmas morning clash between H&W Welders and Knockbreda now looks set to be rearranged for January 3, a Bank Holiday Monday.
Dedicated volunteers have worked tirelessly this week to make the Seaview surface playable but their efforts appear to be in vain.
Crusaders chairman Stephen Bell says that even though much snow has been shifted from the 4G surface, the frosty conditions make the pitch dangerous.
“I’m 99 per cent sure the Steel & Sons Cup final will be postponed,” said Bell.
“It’s very disappointing for everyone and for us as a club as well as we have the Border Cup final between Nortel and Dromara Village scheduled for December 28 but we haven’t even had a chance to clear all the terracing as the pitch has required so much attention.
“There is no sign of a thaw in the coming days and although we can remove a lot of snow we are running out of places to put it and then you have the frost which puts you in a catch 22 situation and the weather eventually defeats you. We also can’t put machinery on the pitch.
“The road conditions in the Shore Road area are also dangerous in places and even if the game went ahead, only a smaller than usual crowd would brave the elements. But I can’t see it being played.”
