Windsor leisure park gets green light
The new Windsor Park will be part of a sporting village after planning approval for new leisure facilities was granted.
The £30m redevelopment of the stadium, which will increase capacity from its previous 14,500 to 18,000, is due to commence within a matter of weeks, following an eight-month delay.
And a leisure park, which will include swimming pools, health and fitness suites, sports halls and outdoor facilities, is to be installed behind the updated West Stand.
Planning approval for the new facility has been granted to Belfast City Council, who will build and run the indoor centre, which will replace the current Olympia Leisure Centre.
Linfield will retain the ownership of a new mini-stadium which will replace their current training pitch at Midgley Park, which is in the shadows of Windsor.
The plans for the redevelopment of the Midgley Park/Olympia Leisure Centre sites were first made public over a year ago, before being presented to the Department of the Environment last December.
The red tape has finally been cut through and the building is expected to overlap with the work at Windsor Park.
Environment Minister Mark H Durkan: "This significant new development scheme is welcome news for the local area bringing new and improved leisure facilities for the community to enjoy.
"This state of the art facility will enhance the already approved Windsor Park stadium development and provide a boost for the southwest of Belfast.
"The application was turned around in just over four months which demonstrates that changes are ensuring a fast, fair and fit-for- purpose planning system."
