Bassong set for Spurs debut

Published 11/08/2009

Tottenham centre-back Sebastien Bassong is set to make his debut for the club at the weekend against Liverpool despite serving only one game of a two-match ban with Newcastle.

The 23-year-old Frenchman was suspended for two games when he was sent off in Newcastle's penultimate game of last season, meaning he would have had to sit out their Coca-Cola Championship opener.

He signed for Spurs before Newcastle's clash against West Brom but Spurs have released a statement confirming he will be available for the Barclays Premier League clash at White Hart Lane.

"Sebastien Bassong will be available for selection for our Premier League season opener against Liverpool on Sunday," read the statement.

It continued: "Given he served the first game of his ban against Aston Villa on the final day of the previous campaign as a Newcastle player, it meant the suspension continued to apply to Newcastle games and was therefore satisfied when his former club visited West Brom on the opening day of the Championship season on Saturday."

Bassong is set to partner Ledley King on Sunday.

King does not train regularly and cannot play matches in quick succession but came through the Olympiacos friendly win on Sunday.

"Keeping Ledley fit will be key this season," said Spurs boss Harry Redknapp. "We want him on the pitch as much as we can - he's so good."
