Newcastle United have emerged as surprise candidates to re-sign Demba Ba on loan.
The Magpies are in talks with the striker, who scored 29 goals in 54 games for the St James’ Park club before joining Chelsea in January after they matched his £7m release clause.
Despite leaving the club at the start of the year, Ba finished last season as Newcastle’s top scorer in the Premier League with 13 goals, five more than Papiss Cisse (8), but Ba has only scored six goals in 23 appearances for Chelsea, and Jose Mourinho did not even play a recognised striker against Manchester United on Monday.
In addition to Ba, Newcastle have also reportedly re-opened talks with Lyons’ striker Bafetimbi Gomis. A fee of £7m had been agreed for the France international but negotiations over the summer previously broke down over wage demands. The deal is believed to not be dependent on whether Yohan Cabaye is sold.
Alan Pardew’s side have only brought in Loic Remy, on loan from Queens Park Rangers, and French teenager Olivier Kemen from Metz this summer.
