Evans and Baird out of Northern Ireland qualifier

Nigel Worthington has lost two members of his defensive unit ahead of next Wednesday’s World Cup qualifier in San Marino.

Jonny Evans was named in the squad on Monday, but he has failed to recover from the ankle injury which brought his run in the Manchester United first-team to an end a couple of weeks ago.

And last night Fulham’s Chris Baird also withdrew from the game against Europe’s smallest competing football nation as he has gone down with a bout of tonsillitis

Worthington is left with five fit defenders and will wait to see if any further injuries occur over the weekend before deciding to call for replacements, with Michael Duff a contender to come in.
