Midfielder Gareth Barry marked his 600th Premier League appearance with a goal as Everton's unbeaten start continued with a 3-1 win over Middlesbrough which moved them into second place.

The 35-year-old, whose milestone has previously been achieved by only Ryan Giggs (632) and Frank Lampard (609), sparked the hosts' comeback with an equaliser after goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg was controversially adjudged to have conceded an own goal from Alvaro Negredo's robust, old-school centre-forward's challenge before Seamus Coleman and Romelu Lukaku wrapped up victory.

That made it four wins and a draw for manager Ronald Koeman, with only Manchester City having a better record in the Premier League.

TWEET OF THE MATCH

"One of the best deals of the summer... Everton paying Southampton £5m to get Ronald Koeman #EFC" - Sky Sports News reporter Kaveh Solhekol (@SkyKaveh)

STAR MAN

Idrissa Gueye. The summer signing from Aston Villa is looking a steal at £7.1million. While others steal the limelight it is his work-rate which is providing the platform.

REF WATCH

Lee Mason fudged Middlesbrough's goal after telling Everton's complaining players Maarten Stekelenburg, credited with an own goal, had dropped the ball when Alvaro Negredo challenged him. To compound matters he also booked the goalkeeper for moaning.

DATA POINT

Everton midfielder Gareth Barry, on his 600th Premier League appearance, has now scored two goals in his last four matches having gone 103 without one.
