Ronald Koeman registered his first home Premier League win as Everton manager but required the assistance of a Shay Given own goal from a Leighton Baines penalty to achieve it.

The defender's second-half spot-kick rebounded back off the post and the Stoke goalkeeper to secure a 1-0 win which should, on the balance of play, have been far more comfortable.

Nevertheless the victory gave Everton their best start to a season since 2006 and ensured the renewed positivity at Goodison Park continues to grow.

TWEET OF THE MATCH

"Great team effort against Stoke today. Watched Bolasie for the first time, promising. SO to my #MOTM Gueye. Stay on top Blues!," former Everton defender Joseph Yobo (@jyobo234).

STAR MAN

Kevin Mirallas. Has made a very good start to life under Ronald Koeman and was particularly lively in the first half here. Ross Barkley, his colleague in the Toffees midfield, also caught the eye, while Ryan Shawcross defended well for Stoke. The efforts of that pair will no doubt have been noted by England boss Sam Allardyce, who was watching from the stands.

MOMENT OF THE MATCH

It was perhaps apt that this game, given its generally low level of quality, was settled in the manner it was - via a fluke. After a penalty award that left Stoke fuming, their goalkeeper Shay Given did well to tip Leighton Baines' spot-kick against the post, only for the ball to bounce back against him and over the line.

DATA POINT

Everton striker Romelu Lukaku scored 18 Premier League goals last season - but drawing a blank here on what was his first league start of 2016-17 extended his run of top-flight games without netting to 11.
