How David Luiz fared against Sergio Aguero
David Luiz and Sergio Aguero came up against each other at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night for the first time since Chelsea's explosive visit to Manchester City in December.
Aguero's knee-high challenge on Luiz earned the City striker a red card and sparked a touchline melee for which both clubs were heavily fined by the Football Association. Chelsea boss Antonio Conte this week claimed Brazil defender Luiz still requires treatment on the knee, more than four months later.
Here, Press Association Sport puts the spotlight on the South American duo in Chelsea's 2-1 win.
Luiz may still need attention on the right knee which Aguero caught, but it was his left knee that was heavily strapped when he came out to warm up. Luiz shook the Argentinian's hand and gave him a friendly tap on the back of the head during the pre-match niceties. So no hard feelings.
Luiz must been tempted to leave his mark on Aguero as the pair chased a long ball into the corner. He resisted, through, instead giving the striker a little nudge which almost sent him crashing into the advertising hoardings.
Aguero did not rise to that bait, instead just rubbing his hand gingerly having whacked it against the advert. Neither player lost their cool despite a tense and at times frantic encounter.
Aguero made an early impression when Thibaut Courtois' poor kick found David Silva. Courtois saved the Spaniard's shot but Aguero was on hand to slot in the rebound. Yet he often had to drift out wide to find the ball with Luiz, the pick of Chelsea's back three, marshalling the centre.
Aguero got his goal, tapping in from close range for his 27th of the season. But thanks to Eden Hazard's double, Luiz and Chelsea got the win they needed to stay in control of the title race.
