How Twitter reacted to England's Euro 2016 match with Russia
England put fans and observers through the wringer in their opening Euro 2016 match against Russia.
An encouraging start failed to produce any goals, but just when anxiety was creeping in, Eric Dier was the surprise goalscorer with a brilliant free-kick.
Cue celebrations and an outpouring of positivity, only for Vasili Berezutsky to level in stoppage time to salvage a 1-1 draw for Russia in Marseille.
Here's how the Group B match played out on Twitter:
England got off to a strong start, bringing plenty of encouragement to their fans.
"The way England have started it's hard to see us not winning this tournament," wrote former England striker @GaryLineker.
"England have been different class Adam Lalana m.o.m so far for me!" - ex-England midfielder Jermaine Jenas (@jjenas8)
And with five Tottenham players in the starting line-up, Manchester City captain @VincentKompany asked: " Is it England playing like Spurs or Spurs like England?"
But with no goals to celebrate, fans grew frustrated with watching lone striker Harry Kane taking the corners.
And Alan Shearer made clear he would want no part of it if he was still playing.
" I have to say that if a manager asked me to take corners, my answer would be 'ask someone else to take them!' #harrykane #ENG" - @alanshearer.
Former England wicketkeeper Alec Stewart (@StewieCricket) thought he had Roy Hodgson's tactics worked out though.
"England to win 1-0. Kane the goal scorer direct from a corner!! #ENG"
As the clock moved past the hour mark, fans were crying out for Roy Hodgson to bring Jamie Vardy off the bench.
"Time for Vardy. #ENGRUS #ENG" wrote novelist @TonyParsonsUK.
"Vardy Vardy Vardy Vardy .... Come on Roy" added British basketball international @joey_leedham13.
But having an unexpected man taking set-pieces worked out when Dier fired in a 73rd-minute free-kick.
"Who put him on free kicks?!! Dier! #ENGRUS" wrote Jamie Carragher ( @Carra23)
" Not Dier. Please. For the love of God not Dier... he's .. WHAT A GOAL!!!! 1-0 #Eng" wrote comedian Omid Djalili (@omid9).
Just when it seemed all was well in England's world again, Vasili Berezutsky sent a looping header into the far corner.
"N o! Cruel. Unjust. Disappointing." wrote TV's personal finance advisor @MartinSLewis.
" Well that was a tad disappointing" added Matt Le Tissier (@mattletiss7).
Carragher was left to wonder why Vardy never did come on.
"Didn't deserve that, played very well. One gripe, if you don't bring Vardy on in that game when else would you? Pace on CA & ageing CB's," he wrote.
But it was not bad news for everyone - England's draw meant Wales top the group after their win over Slovakia.
And that was welcomed by Team Sky rider @GeraintThomas86.
"Still top" he wrote.
