I won’t be signing Campbell, says Wenger

Arsene Wenger has confirmed Sol Campbell is training with Arsenal but maintained the Gunners would not be making a move for their former captain.

The 35-year-old centre-half joined big-spending Coca-Cola League Two side Notts County in August amid a blaze of publicity, but walked out on the club less than a month later.

Having also played for Pompey this year, Campbell, understood to be interesting Championship side West Brom, would under Football League rules be precluded from playing for a third club before January.

Wenger, though, knocked down any suggestions Arsenal could swoop for Campbell who played at Highbury for five years after arriving from arch-rivals Tottenham before then moving to Portsmouth.

“We help him to be fit again,” said the Gunners boss.

“When you are used to a team sport, it can be difficult to keep completely fit on your own. Sol asked me if he could come back here and have some fitness sessions.”

Asked whether Arsenal would take the situation further, Wenger replied: “With us? No. We help him out to get fit.”
