Larsson: Cup run has boosted Blues

Sebastian Larsson

Sebastian Larsson believes Birmingham's Carling Cup success has galvanised their survival fight in the Barclays Premier League.

Blues have taken seven points from their last three games since sealing a Wembley meeting with Arsenal on February 27 to move out of the bottom three. Now victory over Newcastle in Tuesday night's re-arranged league clash will lift them into the top 10 for the first time this season.

"The Carling Cup has not proved a distraction. In fact, it has really given us a lift, getting through that semi-final," said Larsson.

"It has been a big boost to the fans, the players, everyone, and we've been on a decent run since. Hopefully we will be peaking for the end of month at Wembley. That would be special.

"It is going to be a massive day for everyone, a fantastic day, and the team on the other side of the pitch (Arsenal) aren't too bad either so it will be interesting.

"But we know that for now the focus is on getting away from the bottom of the table."

Birmingham also have another home league game - against West Brom - to follow on from the clash with the Magpies

Larsson said: "It is a good chance to go clear (of the bottom), of course it is. But the league is weird this year.

"It is so tight. At the moment it is not looking too bad. But a couple of bad results and we could slip back into it."
