Belfast Telegraph

Liverpool v Manchester United ratings

Simon Mignolet: Had very little to do until picking the ball out of the net following Rooney's fierce volley. Six (out of 10)

Nathaniel Clyne: Had only a minimal impact on the attack and ploughed a shot into the stands after the break. 6

Kolo Toure: Looked solid against Wayne Rooney for most of the match even though the United captain is four years his junior. 7

Mamadou Sakho: Looked wobbly at times and should have tested David de Gea with a second half header. 5

Alberto Moreno: Got forward well and prevented Lingard from getting into the game. 6

Lucas Leiva: Enjoyed a running battle with Marouane Fellaini and protected the back four well. 7

Emre Can: Almost scored when he strode past Smalling and shot at De Gea. 7

Jordan Henderson: Desperately needs some shooting practice. Had three wayward efforts from long range and shot straight at De Gea in the 62nd minute. 5

James Milner: Offered little threat. 5

Adam Lallana: Weak header at De Gea in the 10th minute. 5

Roberto Firmino: Went close a couple of times and succeeded in drawing Daley Blind out of position a couple of times. 7

Jordon Ibe (on for Lallana, 76mins): Could not swing the game in Liverpool's favour and lost Mata for the goal. 5

Christian Benteke (on for Toure, 81mins): Should have come on earlier to test Smalling and Blind. 5

Steven Caulker (on for Milner, 90mins): Thrown on to provide more height up top but it was too late to make a difference. 5

David de Gea: Pulled off a fantastic double save to deny Firmino and Can in the second half. Deservedly awarded the man of the match award. 8

Ashley Young: Hobbled off with an injury towards the end of the first half after a challenge by James Milner. 6

Chris Smalling: Can strode past him with alarming ease and sometimes looked shaky, but played his part in keeping a clean sheet again. 6

Daley Blind: Needs to improve his crossing as his corners rarely beat the first man. Was pulled out of position chasing Firmino on occasion too. 6

Matteo Darmian: Put De Gea in danger with a poor backpass. Looked more comfortable when he switched to right-back. 6

Morgan Schneiderlin: Boyhood Liverpool fan was steady if not spectacular. 6

Marouane Fellaini: Looked in danger of getting sent off early on, but regained his composure and proved to be a nuisance all afternoon. Header rattled the bar before Rooney scored. 7

Jesse Lingard: The only United academy product in the starting XI had little impact. 5

Ander Herrera: Sliced a first-half chance wide and was largely ineffective. 5

Anthony Martial: Did not have a meaningful run at the Liverpool defence until first-half stoppage time but was a menace after the break. 7

Wayne Rooney: Quiet until he popped up with a clinical winner in the second half. Exhibited superb technique with his volley. 8

Cameron Borthwick-Jackson (on for Young, 41mins): A calm and assured presence at full-back. 6

Juan Mata (on for Lingard, 65mins): Provided cross that led to the goal. 7

Memphis Depay (on for Herrera, 71mins): Did little after being introduced: 6
