Philippe Coutinho and Sadio Mane fired Liverpool to victory over West Brom but a late defensive lapse cost them the chance to go top of the Premier League.

Having dominated proceedings from the first whistle at Anfield the Reds were unfortunate not to be further ahead when Gareth McAuley took advantage at a late corner and a 2-1 scoreline was not quite enough to topple Arsenal at the summit.

Yet there was much to love about the Reds here, not least in the first half when Coutinho dummied brilliantly to pave the way for Mane's 20th-minute opener and produced a neat turn and finish after his team-mate repaid the favour.

TWEET OF THE MATCH

"LIVERPOOOOOOOL!!!" Hollywood superstar and Liverpool fan Samuel L Jackson was quick to hail the Reds' win.

STAR MAN

Philippe Coutinho. Had a crucial role in the first goal, scored the second himself in fine style and was generally the most dangerous-looking player on the pitch, involved virtually every time Liverpool threatened.

MOMENT OF THE MATCH

Liverpool's opening goal. A fine team effort. Coutinho's delightful dummy allowed James Milner's pass to run to Emre Can, he fed the ball to Roberto Firmino and the Brazil international's cross was converted by Mane with a right-foot finish at the far post.

VIEW FROM THE BENCH

Given how dominant they had been, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp will be frustrated his side had to endure a nervy conclusion to the contest and ended up having not done enough to move into top spot, having failed to keep a clean sheet for the eighth time in nine Premier League matches this term.

Opposite number Tony Pulis' chief disappointment is likely to be his side's defending for the opening two goals, as well as that West Brom could only rally so late in the game.
