Manchester City have shed light on an alleged scam involving fraudsters posing as football agents.

The con sees young hopefuls offered trials with the club by people claiming to be FIFA-licensed agents, in exchange for money. City also reported that the scam has been tried using several other Premier League clubs.

A statement on their website read: "It has been brought to Manchester City's attention that a number of aspiring young footballers have regrettably fallen victim to a chain scam that is currently circulating worldwide."

The statement continued: "Manchester City would like to make it clear that we are in no way affiliated to the scheme.

"The club's academy has never, and will never, operate in this manner."
